Police charge man over caf fire at Wollongong

A man will face court today charged after allegedly starting a fire that destroyed a Wollongong café yesterday.

About 4am (Wednesday 15 July 2020), emergency services were called to a building on Crown Street, Wollongong, following reports of a fire.

Officers from Wollongong Police District attended and found the building well alight, as Fire and Rescue NSW officers worked to extinguish the blaze.

A crime scene was established and investigations commenced into the origin of the fire, with initial inquiries deeming it suspicious.

Strike Force Dayal was established by detectives from Wollongong to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, a 47-year-old man was arrested at a home on Myuna Way, Mangerton about 10.30am today (Thursday 16 July 2020).

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with damage property by fire.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 16 July 2020).

Inquiries are continuing.
