Police charge man over fatal July crash - Punchbowl

A man has been charged with numerous offences, including drink driving, over a fatal crash at Punchbowl in July.

Just before 7pm on Thursday 11 July 2019, emergency services were called to the intersection of Canterbury and Punchbowl roads at Punchbowl, following a four-car crash.

The driver of a Toyota Seca hatchback, an 80-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was flown to Prince of Wales Hospital, where he later died.

The three other drivers – a 56-year-old man, a 28-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman – were not injured and were taken to Canterbury Hospital for mandatory testing.

Following inquiries by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, on Friday (30 August 2019), a 56-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death (DUI), negligent driving occasioning death, drive with middle range PCA, not give way to oncoming vehicle (right turn), and dangerous driving occasioning death (manner).

Police allege the man had a blood alcohol reading of 0.116 at the time of the crash.

His licence was suspended and he is expected to appear at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 12 November 2019.
