Police charge man over robbery at Wollongong

A man will appear in court today charged over the alleged robbery of another man in Wollongong overnight.

About 12.40am today (Saturday 9 October 2021), a 51-year-old man was sleeping on a park bench at the corner of Crown and Keira Streets, Wollongong, when an unknown man approached him.

The man allegedly attempted to steal personal belongings, before producing a large knife and making threats.

He stole a backpack and fled the scene on foot.

A short time later, officers from Wollongong Police District were notified and commenced inquiries.

A 54-year-old man was arrested at Crown Street and taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was subsequently charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon.

He was refused bail and will appear at Wollongong Bail Court today.

The younger man was not injured during the incident.
