Police charge two after pursuit at Newcastle 19 May

A man and woman will appear in court today charged following an alleged police pursuit near Newcastle.

About 7.15pm yesterday (Thursday 18 May 2023), officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District were patrolling the Hamilton area when they spotted an allegedly stolen SUV travelling on Steel Street.

When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

A short time later, the SUV came to stop on Macquarie Road, Cardiff South, after colliding with a tree.

The driver of the SUV, a 21-year-old woman, and the passenger, a man aged 43, were arrested at the scene before being taken to Belmont Police Station.

The woman was charged with 12 offences including four counts of take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, two counts of drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, goods in personal custody suspected being stolen, shoplifting and larceny.

The man was charged with be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

Both were refused bail to appear before Belmont Local Court today (Friday 19 May 2023).
