Police charge woman after lighting fires at Taree

A woman will face court after allegedly lighting multiple fires in the state's mid north coast this afternoon.

Officers from Manning/Great Lakes Police District attended a bushland reserve near Telopea Drive, Taree, about 1pm (Friday 27 September 2019), following reports of a fire.

It is alleged, a woman was seen lighting fires and threatened a member of the community who attempted to intervene.

Officers were confronted by the woman, armed with a knife and continuing to light fires. OC spray was dispersed when she failed to comply with their directions.

The woman ran at an officer while still armed with the knife and was apprehended after being tasered.

The fires were extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW with minimal property damage sustained.

The 28-year-old was arrested and taken to Taree Police Station where she was charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread, damage/destroy property by fire, intimidation, use weapon to avoid apprehension, possess prohibited weapon and, breaching bail.

She was refused bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court via video link tomorrow (Saturday 28 September 2019).
