Police charge youth after man's hand partially severed in machete attack - Warrawong

A 16-year-old youth has been charged after a man's hand was partially severed during an attack with a machete at Warrawong last week.

Police will allege the incident occurred about 4.20am on Tuesday (12 March 2019), when a 25-year-old man was approached by a male carrying a machete in the rear courtyard of a property on Northcliffe Drive.

The armed male allegedly struck the 25-year-old in the arm and legs with the machete before running from the area.

Emergency services were called, and the injured man was taken to Wollongong Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to reattach his hand.

Following inquiries by officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District, a 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder this morning (Tuesday 19 March 2019).

He was refused bail and appeared in Port Kembla Children's Court today, where bail was refused.

The boy is due to re-appear before the same court on Tuesday 28 May 2019.
