Police investigate Cheltenham fire

Police are investigating a scrub fire that broke out at a Cheltenham reserve yesterday, Victoria Police say.

Emergency services were called to the Cheltenham Park Reserve on Park Road just after 2pm following reports of a blaze, which caused extensive damage to the park and led nearby homes to be evacuated.

No one was injured as a result.

Investigators initially believed the blaze was sparked by an out of control campfire and the investigation continues.

They are particularly keen to speak to anyone with information or who may have been in the vicinity at the time.

At this stage, the blaze does not appear to be linked to a second fire off Spring Street, Sandringham.

Glen Eira Bayside Crime Investigation Unit are investigating with assistance from the Arson Squad.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
