Police investigate fatal crash - Wellington St in Launceston, TAS

Police are calling for witnesses following a two vehicle crash in which a Launceston man was killed early this morning, Tasmania Police say.

Police and emergency services were called to the crash between a red Ford sedan and a white Hyundai station wagon at the intersection of Wellington Street and Frederick Street about 1.55am.

Initial investigations indicate that the red Ford sedan ran a red light and crashed into the Hyundai station wagon.

"The driver of the white Hyundai and passenger of the red Ford were taken to the Launceston General Hospital," Senior Sergeant Jason Jones said.

"Sadly, a short time later, the 48 year old male driver of the white Hyundai was pronounced deceased. Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this tragic time.

"The 21 year old male passenger from the red Ford sustained serious injuries and is currently in a stable condition in hospital.

"The 22 year old driver of the red Ford sedan fled the scene prior to police arrival, but was located about 5am in the Newstead area. He is currently assisting police with their inquiries."

Police are currently investigating the matter and are preparing a report for the Coroner.

Anyone with information, particularly anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the vehicle leading up to the crash, should call Launceston Police on 131444.
