Police investigate Fitzroy stabbing

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a stabbing in Fitzroy this morning (1 June).

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Otter Street and Smith Street just after 1.30am.

It's believed an altercation broke-out between two groups during which two men sustained stab wounds.

A 36-year-old Travancore man sustained serious injuries and was conveyed to hospital where he is expected to undergo surgery.

A 19-year-old Mulgrave man was taken to hospital with a single stab wound and has since been released.

The circumstances of the stabbing are yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.

Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives would like to speak with two men and a woman who were seen in the area at the time of the incident.

It's believed these three and the injured pair was not known to each other.
