Police investigate fuel theft from Midland Highway roadworks site, TAS

Police are investigating the theft of approximately 600 litres of diesel fuel from four heavy machines at the Hazell Bros roadworks site office on the Midland Highway at St Peter’s Pass / Antill Ponds, just north of Oatlands, Tasmania Police say.

Police believe the fuel was stolen between 4pm Friday 24 August and 6am this morning (Monday 27 August).

An illuminated vertical trailer sign was also forced and the two batteries removed from the battery box.

Given the sheer volume of fuel removed, it’s likely to have required a few people and either a tanker or a large utility/truck with multiple fuel drums.

It’s also likely to have taken some time to siphon the fuel. The site is right near the Midland Highway and police are calling for witnesses.

If you noticed anything suspicious occurring at the site, please contact Acting Sergeant Adam Forrest at Oatlands Police Station on 6254 0014 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
