Box Hill Embona detectives are investigating following an armed robbery in Kew on 2 November, Victoria Police say.
Investigators have been told a 20-year-old Pascoe Vale man had arranged to meet with two men he had spoken to via a classifieds website.
The three met on Gellibrand Street about 7.40pm and the victim got into a car to chat with the pair.
Once inside, one of the men produced a machete and the victim received a minor laceration to his neck.
The two men fled with an amount of money in a white older model Holden Commodore.
The men were perceived as being African in appearance and aged in their early to mid-20s.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
