Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at Merri railway station on Friday evening.
A commuter on a train sought assistance from Protective Service Officers (PSOs).
The man got off the train and PSOs remained with the man, who appeared substance affected and continued to behave erratically on the railway platform.
Protective Service Officers requested an ambulance and secured handcuffs on the man due to his increasing erratic behaviour.
The male became unresponsive about 9.45pm and the PSOs commenced CPR.
The 63-year-old man couldn't be revived.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as per standard practice when a person dies in police custody.
