Police investigate serious pedestrian and motor vehicle crash - Claremont, TAS

Police are calling for witnesses to a serious crash between a pedestrian and motor vehicle in Claremont on Friday night, Tasmania Police say.

A male pedestrian was struck by a car in the southbound lanes of the Brooker Highway at the Abbotsfield Road on-ramp, Claremont, about 8.10pm on Friday 1 June.

The crash occurred when a red Mazda hatch, travelling southbound, struck a pedestrian walking across the highway.  The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was treated at the scene by members of the public and was later transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment.  The pedestrian underwent surgery and is in a serious condition.

The driver of the Mazda, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, sustained facial and hand injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment and to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

The Brooker Highway was closed to southbound traffic, between Abbotsfield Road and Claremont Link Road, for approximately 5 hours whilst crash investigation and forensic officers investigated the crash.

Excessive speed is not believed to be a contributing factor, however the circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated.  The crash occurred on an unlit section of highway.

Senior Constable Richard Keygan from Southern Crash Investigation Services would like to speak to any person who may have witnessed the crash or seen either the pedestrian or the red Mazda prior to the crash.  Information can be provided by calling 131 444.
