Police investigating after man struck by axe at Lake Illawarra

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was allegedly struck in the head with the butt of an axe earlier today.

Shortly after 12pm (Tuesday 28 January 2020), two men were involved in a verbal altercation at a service station on Shellharbour Road, Warilla.

The men moved outside, where police have been told one of the men was struck in the head with the butt of an axe.

Officers from Lake lllawarra Police District attended and established a crime scene. A vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital with suspected head injuries. He is in a stable condition and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

As inquiries continue, police believe a woman may have been involved in the alleged altercation. The man and woman allegedly fled the scene following the altercation and have not been seen since.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a slim build, approximately 170cm tall. He was wearing a bandage on his head and a hospital band around his wrist at the time of the incident.

Police do not believe there is a threat to the general public.
