Police issue statement on unlawful release of information by a police officer

The following can be attributed to a QPS spokesperson:

Although the privacy complaint referred to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Appeal Tribunal following the unlawful release of information by a police officer raised a number of significant legal issues, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) does not wish to further appeal the matter.

The QPS will co-operate with its insurers and Crown Law to resolve the outstanding issue of compensation as soon as possible.

The QPS expects that every member of the organisation discharges their duties ethically and professionally. A failure to discharge prescribed responsibilities in an ethical, professional and lawful manner erodes public trust and confidence in the QPS.

The QPS acknowledges that the unlawful or improper use of information can have significant consequences and impacts for those individuals whose privacy have been breached, and expresses sincere regret.

QPS employees are expected to act in accordance with the law at all times. While acknowledging the difficult and challenging roles and duties performed by QPS employees on a daily basis, and mistakes can occur, wilful unlawful and criminal behaviour will not be condoned or tolerated.

The officer in this case has been criminally charged, convicted and sentenced for his conduct by the courts. The QPS has suspended the officer pending the finalisation of the appeal lodged by the officer against sentence.
