Police launch drink driving crackdown

Drink and drug drivers are being put on notice across Queensland with police launching a three-day traffic crackdown across the state from today, Queensland Police say.

Operation Stopper will see police conducting multiple random breath testing and roadside drug testing in various hot spots from the Gold Coast to Cairns.

Last weekend, police conducted 20,488 random breath tests with 230 people charged with drink driving.

Over the same period, police tested 423 drivers for drugs with 93 returning a positive result.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said the weekend before Christmas was traditionally a busy period for revellers travelling to and from festivities.

"Police are reminding everyone attending Christmas festivities and end-of-year functions this weekend to have a plan to get home safely," Assistant Commissioner Keating said.

"Do not gamble with your life or the lives of other road users by getting behind the wheel of a vehicle affected by alcohol or drugs.

"Drink driving contributed to 57 fatalities on Queensland roads last year."

Assistant Commissioner Keating said Operation Stopper was one of a range of targeted traffic enforcement strategies police were rolling out as part of the Christmas Road Safety Campaign.

"Operation Stopper is primarily designed to stop drink and drug drivers in their tracks and create a safer environment for all other road users," he said.

"As part of our commitment to road safety, motorists will notice a heightened police presence on our roads across the entire holiday period."

The 50-day Christmas Road Safety Campaign commenced on December 9 and continues until January 27, 2017.

Queensland’s road toll is currently 238, three more fatalities than this time last year.
