Police launch investigation into $500k opal theft at Lake Illawarra

An investigation is underway after more than half a million dollars' worth of opals was stolen during a home invasion in the Illawarra overnight.

Shortly after 1am (Wednesday 10 February 2021), four unknown people broke into a home on the Princes Highway, Albion Park Rail, and demanded opal stones from the occupant's personal collection.

The occupants complied, and the four people left in a dark sedan with a large collection of opals.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives have commenced an investigation with the opals believed to be worth in excess of $500,000.

No one was physically injured during the incident.
