Police lay charges after fatal pedestrian crash near Wollongong

A teenage girl has been charged after a man died when he was hit by a car in Port Kembla last month.

Just after 3.15pm on Saturday 18 April 2020, emergency services were called to Cowper Road, Port Kembla, following reports a man, who had been fixing a trailer, had been hit by a car.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man – aged in his 60's – suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

The 17-year-old female driver was taken to Wollongong Hospital with serious injuries.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District, with assistance from Crash Investigation Unit, established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.

Following inquiries, the girl was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death. She is set to appear before a children's court on Tuesday 15 September 2020.
