A man has been charged after a police vehicle was rammed during a pursuit in the state's south earlier this week.
On Wednesday 28 April 2021, Victoria and NSW Police were conducting a cross-border operation, when officers attached to Murray River Police District observed a white Mitsubishi Magna sedan in the Albury area allegedly travelling above the speed limit.
PolAir monitored the vehicle as it travelled across the border towards Shepperton, Victoria, before it travelled back to Wodonga.
About 1.30am yesterday (Thursday 29 April 2021), officers from Murray River Police District attempted to arrest the driver while he was stopped on Wantigong Street, North Albury.
When the vehicle drove away a pursuit was initiated which continued into Lavington.
During the pursuit, a marked highway patrol vehicle and an unmarked police vehicle were rammed causing damage to both vehicles.
The driver ran from the vehicle and police commenced a foot pursuit.
The 20-year-old man was arrested a short time later on Griffith Road and taken to Albury Base Hospital where he remains for treatment to injuries sustained in an unrelated incident. He also underwent mandatory testing.
He was charged with a total of 15 offences including dishonestly obtain property by deception, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, predatory driving, reckless driving, police pursuit, use offensive weapon to prevent detention and drug possession.
He was refused bail during a bedside hearing today (Friday 30 April 2021). He will re-appear at the same court on Tuesday 18 May 2021.
He will also be facing further charges of drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous and driving during his disqualification period. These offences are alleged to have occurred on Tuesday 27 April 2021.
