Police lay charges after protest in Melbourne

Police have charged a man after an officer was allegedly assaulted during a protest in Melbourne's CBD last Thursday.

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have overnight charged a 48-year-old Southbank man with offences including assaulting a police officer causing injury, affray, riotous behaviour and breaching the Chief Health Officer directions.

He was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.

A 24-year-old Footscray female was also interviewed yesterday in relation to discharging a missile, riotous behaviour and breaching the Chief Health Officer directions. She was released and is expected to be charged on summons to appear at court at a later date.

Another male has also been identified by police, in relation to an investigation into the release of a flare at the protest.

Detectives would like to thank the public for their assistance and the investigation remains ongoing.
