Police officers assaulted during arrest in Tweed/Byron

Two police officers have been injured during the arrest of a man for drug offences at Brunswick Heads yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 10pm (Thursday 31 May 2108), officers from Operation Tasman North, a high visibility operation in the Northern Region, were patrolling Riverside Crescent when they noticed a driver acting suspiciously.

Police pulled over the car and spoke to the driver, when it is alleged he became violent towards the officers and started throwing punches and kicking.

Police eventually controlled the 22-year-old man, and he was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.

Police further allege they located cannabis on the man after he was searched.

He was charged with two counts of assault police, two counts of resist arrest and possess prohibited drug.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Mullumbimby Local Court on 26 June 2018.

The officers sustained swelling and cuts to their face and bodies.
