Police probe assault in Cobar

Police are investigating an assault in central western NSW last night, NSW Police say.

About 11.40pm yesterday, emergency services were called to Barton Street, Cobar, responding to reports a man was unconscious.

Police have been told two men – aged 21 and 31 – were involved in a verbal and physical altercation on the footpath, when the older man fell to the ground.

When officers from Darling River Local Area Command arrived, he was unconscious.

The man was treated at the scene for head injuries by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to Cobar Hospital and later airlifted to Dubbo Hospital with a suspected fractured skull.

The 21-year-old man was arrested and taken to Cobar Police Station. He was released pending further inquiries.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to come forward.
