Police probe fatal bicycle crash in Fairfield

A man has died in hospital after his bicycle and a car collided in Sydney’s west yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 9.20pm yesterday today, a 42-year-old woman was driving a Toyota Corolla when she turned right on to Ware Street, Fairfield.

At the same time, a 79-year-old male was riding a bicycle across a pedestrian crossing on Ware Street when he was hit by the Toyota Corolla.

Officers from Fairfield Local Area Command attended and found the man on the roadway, unconscious.

He was treated for a head injury at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, where he has since died.

The vehicle and bicycle ware seized for forensic and mechanical examination.

The female driver was taken to Fairfield Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing. She was later taken to Fairfield Police Station to assist police with their inquires. Charges have yet been laid.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact police or Crime Stopers.
