Police probe livestock theft in West Wyalong

Police are investigating following the alleged theft of livestock near West Wyalong earlier this month, NSW Police say.

On Friday 1 April 2016, a 56-year-old man attended his rural property on Cattles Lane, Callen, approximately 30 km from West Wyalong, and noticed a significant number of merino sheep missing.

He attended West Wyalong Police Station and notified police of the incident.

About 11.45am the same day, police attached to Griffith Local Area Command attended a rural property on Merrengreen Road, Callen. Police spoke with two men – aged 85 and 64 – at the property.

With the assistance of rural crime investigators from Griffith, Wagga Wagga and Cootamundra, a search warrant was executed and a total of 1130 sheep were counted and seized at the property.

About 9am on Monday 4 April 2016, the rural crime investigators conducted a drafting process of the sheep seized. As a result, 607 of these sheep were identified as belonging to the 56-year-old man.

Inquiries continue and the two men from the Callen property are expected to be charged.
