Police probe suspicious fire in Camperdown

Two police officers have suffered smoke inhalation as they responded to a fire in Sydney’s inner-west this morning, NSW Police say.

Officers from Leichardt Police Area Command were patrolling in Church Street about 2.40am (Tuesday 10 April 2018), when they noticed smoke emanating from the front porch of a townhouse.

The officers approached the premises and saw a fire had broken out on the front veranda. Officers started knocking on the front door to raise the occupant.

Moments later a man opened the door and he was escorted to safety while firefighters extinguished the fire.

The occupant was not injured; however, the two constables were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for smoke inhalation.

A crime scene has been established while officers from Inner West Police Area Command work to determine exactly how the fire was started.

Early investigations suggest the fire was deliberately lit.

Police are calling for anyone who may have information that could assist with their inquiries to contact or Crime Stoppers.
