Police search for missing spear fisherman - South West Rocks

A large search operation is underway for a missing spear fisherman on the state's Mid North Coast.

Emergency services were called to Laggers Point, near Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks, after reports a spear fisherman had been washed off rocks about 1pm (Thursday 4 February 2021).

Police have been told a 53-year-old man and his son were spear fishing in nearby water when a large wave pushed them onto rocks; the older man was swept back into the water a short time later and has not been seen since.

A large-scale search operation is now underway with officers from Mid North Coast Police District, Water Police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Marine Rescue, NSW Ambulance, NSW Surf Lifesaving and local lifeguards searching for the man.

He was last seen wearing a blue and green full-length wetsuit with a yellow-tipped snorkel and one black flipper.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
