Police seek witnesses to police member assaulted at protest

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for witnesses after a police member was assaulted at a protest in Melbourne over the weekend.

Police were performing traffic management duties when a dispute between a motorist and a protester broke out on King Street on Saturday, 14 May about 1.30pm.

When police intervened, the protestor struck out at police and assaulted an officer.

The protester was sprayed by police and went back into the crowd, before assaulting the same officer again a short time later.

The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have released images of a man they believe can assist with the investigation.

He is described as medium build with short dark balding hair.
