Police shooting at King Street nightclub

Two people have been taken to hospital after being shot by police at a Melbourne nightclub this morning, Victoria Police say.

Police received a report of a man armed with a gun in an upstairs room of the King Street nightclub shortly after 3am.

Members from the Critical Incident Response Team attended to speak to the man who pulled out a handgun.

Police fired at the man, hitting him in the torso.

He was taken to hospital under police guard.

A woman also sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Armed Crime Squad detectives will investigate the shooting, with oversight by Professional Standards Command as per standard protocol when there has been a police shooting.
