Police update 3: Fatal house fire, Russell Island

A 61-year-old Tweed Heads woman has been issued a notice to appear following a fire that occurred at Todman Street, Russell Island on August 6, 2023, that claimed the lives of six people and destroyed three houses.

It will be alleged the woman is the owner of the property and was not present when the fire occurred. It will be further alleged the house did not have compliant smoke alarms.

The woman has been served a notice to appear on one count of owners must install smoke alarms.

She is expected to appear at the Cleveland Magistrates Court on March 26.

Detectives continue to investigate the fire and a final report is expected to be submitted to the Coroner in the near future.
