Police update: fatal crash at Illawarra

Investigations into yesterday's fatal crash in the state's Illawarra Region continue.

About 7.15pm (Friday 5 March 2021) emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash in the south-bound lanes of the M1 Princes Highway at Figtree, near the Masters Road off-ramp.

Two vehicles, including a Holden Statesman and a Nissan Juke, both travelling south, collided.

The Statesman, being driven by a 47-year-old woman, and carrying three passengers including a 15-year-old girl and two boys aged 5 and 10 hit a median strip before crashing into a tree.

The driver died at the scene; her three passengers were air lifted to The Children's Hospital at Westmead where the 15-year-old is listed as critical, and the two boys are stable.

The 29-year-old driver of the Nissan, and her 32-year-old male passenger were uninjured. The driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

The crash is now being investigated by officers from the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing to any witnesses to the crash or anyone who might have dash cam footage to contact crash investigators.
