Police Update: Structure Fire - Mayfield

Evacuation orders at the site of a large fire in the Newcastle area have been revised.

About 3.30pm (Monday 18 May 2026), emergency services responded to a structure fire on the Corner of Denison Street and Maitland Road.

The fire was contained and is still being monitored by Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters. The fire response is still underway, and the community is urged to avoid the immediate area. A small amount of smoke is emanating from the site, and local residents are encouraged to close doors and windows to limit smoke exposure.

About 30 homes near the fire zone were initially evacuated; however, most residents have since returned to their homes. Four homes on Denison Street are still affected by the evacuation order. Occupants are liaising with the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.

If residents locate any item of concern on their properties that they believe may be contaminated, they are advised NOT to touch the items, and contact EPA on 131 555.

Denison Street between Maitland Road and Waratah Street remains closed to traffic and pedestrians.

Maitland Road is open, with motorists reminded to drive carefully around emergency services vehicles and personnel in the area.

While the fire is still under investigation, initial inquiries suggest the fire is not suspicious.
