Queensland police are pleading with all road users to be extra vigilant following a horrific start to the Christmas school holidays, Queensland Police say.
Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said seven people had lost their lives in road traffic crashes since Friday.
"We have seen a very tragic and disappointing start to the school holidays on Queensland roads with the deaths of seven people in just the first weekend," Assistant Commissioner Keating said.
"Any loss of life on our roads is tragic but it is especially difficult for the family and friends of those affected at this time of year when people should be enjoying celebrations rather than grieving the loss of a loved one.
"Alarmingly, we have surpassed the total number of fatalities in December last year in just the first 11 days of December this year.
"While each of the seven fatal traffic crashes remain under investigation, early inquiries indicate excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs may have contributed to at least two of the crashes," he said.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) launched its annual Christmas Road Safety Campaign last week with the 50-day blitz commencing on Friday, coinciding with the start of school holidays.
Assistant Commissioner Keating said police across the state had already ramped up their traffic enforcement efforts.
"We are urging everyone to take road safety seriously and make responsible decisions on our roads, particularly over the holiday period where road networks are at their peak," he said.
"Police will maintain a high presence throughout the campaign and continue to target high risk road users."
Queensland’s road toll is currently 236, three more fatalities than this time last year.
