Poor driving behaviour continuing to put others at risk, NSW

Police from Traffic & Highway Patrol Command have urged drivers to obey the road rules after several people were charged with traffic offences over the weekend, NSW Police say.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith of the state's Traffic & Highway Patrol Command said poor driver behaviour continues to put others at risk on NSW roads.

"Thankfully police have been able to detect, intercept and prosecute these people before serious injury and fatal crashes have occurred for what is selfish behaviour on our roads," he said.

Over the weekend Traffic & Highway Patrol Command Officers responded to several incidents including:

- A 50-year-old man was arrested near Bega on Sunday 6 August 2017 after he allegedly blew more than six times the legal limit. The Liverpool man, on a provisional licence, was stopped a short time later and subjected to a roadside breath test which he allegedly failed. The driver was taken to Liverpool Police Station for a breath analysis, returning a reading of .130. The driver was later issued Field Court Attendance Notices for mid-range drink-driving and speeding over 45kph. He is due to appear before Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday 30 August 2017. The man’s licence was also suspended for three months.

- A man was issued infringement notices after allegedly driving more than twice the speed limit on Victoria Road, Rozelle. About 11.15pm on Friday 4 August 2017, police allege a white Toyota Aurion driven by a 30-year-old man from Horsley Park, was driving at 136km/h in a 60km/h zone. The numberplates on the vehicle were confiscated for a period of three months.

- A man was charged after allegedly failing to stop for a random breath test at Guilford. Just after 12am on Saturday 5 August 2017, police with the assistance of POLAIR allegedly pursued a white Toyota Hilux which had previously failed to stop for a random breath test whilst on McCredie Road and other streets throughout Guildford. The 23-year-old man allegedly drove at 110km/h in 50kph zones and drove through red traffic control lights. The car allegedly stopped on Keyne Street, Prospect, where the driver, from St Johns Park, allegedly ran into the yard of a home in Broad Street, Prospect. Just before 9am, police spotted the Porsche allegedly driving at 208km/h on the Hume Highway near Gundagai. The man, from Glebe, allegedly lost control of the vehicle on a right-hand bend and came to rest in lane two of the highway facing in the opposite direction. The driver allegedly veered into nearby paddocks before leaving on foot towards a nearby property. He was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station. The man was charged with receive property stolen outside NSW, police pursuit not stop drive dangerously (Skye’s Law), never licensed, and drive recklessly or in a manner dangerous. He was refused bail to appear at Wagga Local Court on Monday 7 August 2017. Investigations continue.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said that it was reckless driving that was costing lives on our roads.

"With the road toll currently at 228, this number could quite easily have risen more if not for the good work of Traffic & Highway Patrol Command officers, along with other police, who have prosecuted these drivers on our roads; preventing those drivers, their passengers and other road users being either seriously injured, or worse, killed," he said.

"While police will continue to enforce traffic laws on our roads, personal responsibility is the key to helping drive down the road toll, which for these drivers prosecuted by police across the weekend, is sadly lacking."
