Last year, NSW Fair Trading building investigators conducted over 400 site inspections targeting unlicensed work. Over the coming months, investigators will be doing unannounced compliance blitzs in bushfire affected communities.
Any unlicensed builders and tradies offering cheap, quick, cash-only repairs will face disciplinary action. Maximum penalties include imprisonment and fines of $22,000 for an individual or $110,000 for a corporation.
A licence is required in NSW for any residential building work valued over $5000 and all specialist work regardless of the value.
People are being encouraged to use the free NSW Government clean-up service before hiring a contractor. The clean-up service is available for insured and uninsured residences and businesses affected by the bushfires.
Minister for Better Regulation Kevin Anderson said the last thing a person or family affected by bushfires needs is an unlicensed builder carrying out work unlawfully and potentially creating major issues.
"Only experienced professionals know how to navigate the many possible hazards caused by fires, so it's essential all work is carried out by licensed tradies," Mr Anderson said.
