Protecting Our Environment: 2018-19 Environment Grant Funding Applications Closing Soon

Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Eva Lawler, today opened Sustainable House Day – a popular event made possible through the Territory Labor Government’s Environment Grants.

The NT Government is investing more than $1 million in the 2018-19 Environment Grant Program, last year The Environment Centre NT was given a Small Environment Project grant to hold the 2018 Sustainable House Day.

This is the seventh time the Sustainable House Day has been delivered in Darwin by the Environment Centre NT with the aid of Environment Grants from the Northern Territory Government.

Sustainable House Day is a feature event on the Darwin calendar and continues to provide inspiring examples and information of tropical sustainable living.

In 2017, the event saw more than 350 people making 637 visits to 5 inspiring, beautiful buildings.

Organisations wanting to make a positive contribution to their communities can still apply for the 2018-19 Environment Grants Program, which opened last month.

The grants are designed to engage the community to help mitigate environmental harm and raise awareness to safeguard the Territory’s unique environment.

As noted by Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory’s natural environment is one of our greatest assets and a big part of what makes living here so special. It supports our great lifestyle, drives our tourism industry, supports opportunities for economic development and creates jobs.

“That’s why the Territory Labor Government is investing more than $1 million in 2018-19 in environment program funding to non-government organisation and through the Environment Grants.

“Sustainable House Day is a great example of what these Environment Grants can be used for, and I look forward to seeing many more organisations ideas and initiatives that will benefit the environment and create opportunities for jobs for Territorians.

As stated by the Environment Centre NT Director, Shar Molloy:

“Having the support to run an event like Sustainable House Day has allowed us to open the doors to five local houses with a wide range of sustainability features. Allowing the community to see and experience the different ways a home can be more efficient is a rare and inspiring education opportunity.

“Energy bills are pressure point for many families and residents of Darwin. Having homeowners talking about how they have made their home more comfortable and cheaper to run can break down barriers in understanding what features make a home more sustainable. The houses we’ve chosen to showcase include a wide range of features, including some very inexpensive and simple changes that are accessible to the community.

“I encourage other organisations looking to create positive environmental change to apply for this grant opportunity as they are a fantastic opportunity for collective sustainable progression in Darwin.
