QPRC Bans Smart Glasses In Aquatic Centres

Council has voted to ban AI smart glasses in its aquatic centres to help protect the privacy and safety of residents and visitors.

The ban follows growing concern about wearable devices that can discreetly record video, take photos and capture audio. The change will help ensure aquatic centres remain safe, respectful and welcoming places for everyone.

Mayor Kenrick Winchester said the decision was a practical response to emerging technology and community expectations around privacy.

"Council is committed to creating safe and respectful environments across all of its facilities, so residents and visitors feel welcome, safe and comfortable," Mayor Winchester said.

"We've recently seen a rise in wearable technology such as smart glasses and similar devices. These devices can record video, take photos and capture audio without other people being aware.

"While I recognise this technology has legitimate uses, including for people who need accessibility and disability support, it also raises important privacy and child safety concerns.

"This is especially relevant in places where community members have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as our aquatic centres, change rooms, children's services and youth facilities.

"Council already has rules in place around photography, filming and inappropriate recording activities in our venues. With this new technology, it makes sense to provide clear guidance about when these devices can be used and to make sure everyone remains safe.

"These emerging technologies warrant a review of our existing position, rules and regulations to make sure our community, and everyone who uses our facilities, remains safe and respected."

Council will update conditions of entry and signage at its aquatic centres to reflect the ban.
