Rockhampton Airport can now boast a new mezzanine floor and passenger lounges, thanks to $6.44 million from the Palaszczuk Government's $200 million COVID Works for Queensland program.

Member for Rockhampton Barry O'Rourke said COVID Works for Queensland was helping to deliver the terminal upgrade.

"The new passenger lounges and mezzanine floor are looking fantastic and the terminal will be a tremendous first impression for visitors to this beautiful region," Mr O'Rourke said.

"The upgrade is supporting more than 50 local jobs, helping the Rockhampton community to unite and recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This is the type of project that COVID Works for Queensland was designed to help councils deliver for their communities, alongside the jobs as part of Queensland's plan for economic recovery.

"It builds on the $36.6 million the Rockhampton Regional Council has received from the Palaszczuk Government's $800 million Works for Queensland program which has seen more than 800 jobs created or supported in Rockhampton, helping deliver 38 projects for the region so far.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the Works for Queensland Program continued to delivered for the Rockhampton Region.

"The Queensland Government's Works for Queensland Program is making such a difference here in our region, and we just wouldn't be able to do projects like this without it.

"The mezzanine floor provides additional floor space and will host a whole range of equipment and computers – you could call it the brain of the building – as well as offices for airport staff.

"The airport lounges will help us take Rockhampton Airport up to the next level, allowing tourists and business travellers to enjoy the comfortable options they expect from a modern airport.

"It will also be a nice welcome home for returning locals!"

The lounges will now be fitted out before they are open for use; further media will be announced when the fit out is complete.
