The Crisafulli Government is investing $3.5 million to upgrade four regional rail trails across Queensland, with the investment supporting the Destination 2045 strategy to grow the State's ecotourism potential and strengthen regional communities.
This targeted investment across the State will improve safety, accessibility, and user experience, while supporting regional tourism and active transport options.
Destination 2045 marks a turning point after a decade of decline under the former Labor Government, where funding was slashed and the brakes were slammed on supporting regional tourism.
In just 10 months, the Crisafulli Government is getting the upgrades 'on track' and driving regional development, while restoring confidence, rebuilding infrastructure, and delivering results.
Funded through the Department of Transport and Main Road's Rail Trail Program, the investment will deliver targeted upgrades to:
Pioneer Valley Rail Trail ($75,000)
Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail ($1.6 million)
Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail ($147,000)
Brisbane Valley Rail Trail ($1.6 million)
By enhancing these trails, the Crisafulli Government is helping to grow Queensland's bike tourism offerings, providing more ways for people to connect with the natural environment.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the Rail Trail Program would increase visitation and economic activity in regional areas.
"Cycling tourism is growing rapidly, and rail trails play a vital role in supporting the economies of regional towns," Minister Mickelberg said.
"This investment helps revitalise disused infrastructure, connect people with nature, and create new opportunities for communities to grow and prosper.
"Supporting the development of rail trail experiences in Queensland also contributes to Destination 2045's ecotourism and regional growth priorities."
Member for Callide, Bryson Head, welcomed the investment and highlighted its importance for communities across his electorate.
"This is a great investment to boost our region," Mr Head said.
"The rail trails are attracting interest from far and wide, bringing visitors to the area and creating new ecotourism opportunities.
"Importantly, these trails showcase what our communities have to offer - strong community spirit, thriving agriculture, fresh produce, welcoming local pubs and cafés, and some of the best views in Queensland."
Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail Inc. President Merryn King welcomed this boost for the region.
"This additional funding will improve access and safety aspects to 14km of trail surface and three bridges in the North Burnett and two bridges within the Boyne Valley section," she said.
"Continued support from members, volunteers and community groups will undoubtedly develop this rail trail to become one of the major tourist attractions within the Gladstone and North Burnett Regions."
