Queensland hosts World Premiere of Australian-first Netflix series Tidelands

Tidelands – the first Netflix original series to be made in Australia – is expected to receive a rousing reception at its World Premiere in Brisbane tonight, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and invited guests getting a first look at the series just days before it begins streaming to a global audience.

The Premier said the highly-anticipated supernatural series delivered real benefits for Queensland.

"I’m thrilled to join the talented cast and crew of Tidelands for the World Premiere of this new ‘binge-worthy’ series, filmed entirely in South East Queensland and supported by Screen Queensland and the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy," the Premier said.

"Our support of this eight-part series led to the employment of more than 500 Queenslanders and injected an estimated $12 million into the local economy.

"And while Tidelands has a distinct Australian flavour, it has a truly international appeal and will soon be available to more than 130 million Netflix customers in 190 countries.

"As our friends in the northern hemisphere shiver through another frosty winter, Tidelands will allow them a brief escape to our sun-soaked coast.

"North Stradbroke Island, Cleveland, Victoria Point, Redland Bay and Shorncliffe are among the stunning locations which stand-in for the fictional town of Orphelin Bay in the series.

"I hope viewers will feel inspired to come and explore the real Orphelin Bay and dive into their own adventure here in South East Queensland."

Tidelands follows Cal McTeer, played by Charlotte Best (Home & Away, Puberty Blues), a young woman who returns home to the small fishing village of Orphelin Bay after ten years in juvenile detention and jail.

Over the course of the series, Cal sets out to uncover the town’s well-hidden secrets, while investigating a commune of outcasts who live in a hidden pocket of the bay - a group of half-siren / half-human "Tidelanders".

Elsa Pataky, Madeleine Madden, Aaron Jakubenko, Marco Pigossi and Mattias Inwood co-star in the series, which was written by Stephen M. Irwin and Leigh McGrath and produced by local Queensland production house Hoodlum Entertainment.

Hoodlum is the Emmy™ and BAFTA™ award-winning team behind original series including Secrets & Lies, The Strange Calls and Brisbane-set drama series Harrow.

Filming is currently underway for the second season of Harrow, which will air on ABC1 in 2019.

Next year will also see the world premiere of the another Netflix original series filmed in Queensland – a 10-part comedy from acclaimed writer and comedian Chris Lilley (We Can Be Heroes, Summer Heights High).

Tidelands will launch globally on Netflix on 14 December 2018.
