Seventy-three neighbourhood centres across Queensland will share in more than $600,000 under the Palaszczuk Government’s Thriving Queensland Communities Grants program.
Minister for Communities Coralee O'Rourke today (24 October) announced the successful recipients of the one-off grants to run events, deliver projects, or to purchase equipment to help make Queensland communities thrive.
"We are very fortunate to have a network of 124 neighbourhood centres across the state that Queenslanders can access for information, advice, counselling and support," Mrs O’Rourke said.
"Neighbourhood centres are a hub for local services and support – from playgroups and parenting programs, to housing and homelessness services, education and training programs and even visiting medical clinics.
"That’s why the Palaszczuk Government created the new Thriving Queensland Communities Grants and provided the opportunity for neighbourhood centres to apply for this funding.
"One-off grants of between $2,000 and $10,000 have been made available to neighbourhood centres under this program."
Mrs O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to creating thriving communities where people are resilient, able to participate and engage in their community and enjoy economic and social wellbeing.
"Neighbourhood centres are at the heart of this vision – improving the lives of Queenslanders every day," she said.
"Their role in our communities can’t be underestimated.
"That’s why I’m delighted that we are investing $16.3 million per year to operate the 124 neighbourhood centres across the state.
"Additionally, 11 centres across regional Queensland have undergone upgrades and expansions totalling nearly $4 million since 1 July 2017.
"The Thriving Queensland Communities grants will support neighbourhood centres to continue to be vital places where people go to come together, and where people go when they need support."
The Thriving Queensland Communities Grants program was coordinated by the neighbourhood centre’s peak body – the Queensland Families and Communities Association.
