Random breath testing targets drink and drug drivers in Launceston, TAS

A major traffic operation targeting drink and drug drivers was held in various locations around Launceston over the weekend, Tasmania Police say.

Between 8:00pm and 11:30pm on Friday 26 October, police intercepted and tested 1,064 drivers in Wellington Street, outside the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. Two drivers were detected and charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit, while two drivers were detected as driving with illicit drugs in their system.

Smaller operations conducted on Saturday night tested 365 drivers, with one driver detected and charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit.

"While we’re were happy with the overall driver behaviour, road safety is a priority for Tasmania Police and it’s concerning that people continue to run the risk of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs," said Inspector Ruth Orr.

"As we head into the warmer months and the festive season, operations such as these will be conducted throughout the Northern District. Drivers are reminded that speeding, not wearing seatbelts and alcohol and drugs are all contributors to the ‘fatal five’ in terms of motor vehicle crashes.

"All drivers are urged to take care on our roads and be mindful of their own safety as well as that of other road users. Remember, Tasmania Police could be anywhere, anytime."
