Rebecca White must reject Shorten's negative gearing plan, which will drive up rents

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Housing

Rebecca White and Tasmanian Labor needs to emphatically reject Bill Shorten's negative gearing policy, if she really does care about relieving housing stress for Tasmanians.

Scrapping negative gearing will deter investors from building houses, particularly in the private market, meaning there will be less supply to keep up with the high levels of demand for housing we are currently seeing in Tasmania.

Further, SQM Research believes that as a result of Labor's policy, market rents in Australia could rise between 7 per cent to 12 per cent over the period 2020 to 2022.

Labor are offering no alternatives to our new four year Action Plan and record investment of $200 million over eight years to tackle housing stress and homelessness around the state.

Given that Rebecca White and Tasmanian Labor have no policies of their own to address the housing challenge, the very least they can do is to oppose Federal Labor's policies which will mean less houses will be built.
