The Custodial Inspector has today released his latest report, Custody: Reception to Release report 2025, which is based on inspections completed throughout 2022.
The report provides useful insights into the experience of people as they move through the prison system.
Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, welcomed the report and thanked the Custodial Inspector for his work.
"It was pleasing to see that the Custodial Inspector recognised the vital role our Tasmania Prison Service staff play in reintegration," Minister Barnett said.
"It is these dedicated staff of the TPS that help support prisoners to make positive progress when they are in custody so that they can reintegrate into the community and contribute more positively when they are released.
"It was also pleasing to note the Custodial Inspectors acknowledgement of improvements across many areas of the prison, including the provision of video inductions to prisoners, the opening of the state-of-the-art Southern Remand Centre, and the internal complaints process."
The report made 8 recommendations: 6 to the Tasmania Prison Service, and 2 to the Parliament of Tasmania.
"The Tasmanian Prison Service has accepted all recommendations made to it, and work is already underway to address them," Minister Barnett said.
"The government will be taking time to consider the recommendations made to the Parliament.
"We remain firmly committed to addressing the issues raised by the Custodial Inspector in his reports, and work is constantly occurring to address the issues he has raised."
