Removal Of Elm Tree On Anzac Avenue

Council update

An elm tree that once stood in the Avenue of Honour in Hurstbridge unfortunately has died.

A permit was granted and the tree was removed for our community's safety.

"We are currently looking into ways we can preserve the history of the elms on Anzac Avenue and want to make sure that their story and place in Hurstbridge is continued and remembered," Deputy Mayor Councillor Joiner said.

"It's incredibly sad to see this tree go but we will do everything we can to make sure that the elm's heritage will continue to be a part of Hurstbridge's community story," she continued.

The existing plaque, which stands as a memorial to the local soldiers who served in World War I and commemorates the spirit of the local community, will be relocated to one of the other trees that remain.

The elm on Anzac Avenue

Why was the tree removed?

Unfortunately, the tree had died and its weathering, decaying branches were at risk of falling on the road and onto road users.

Has the community been engaged regarding the removal of the tree?

Deputy Mayor Councillor Joiner along with Council officers facilitated a meeting with key community members to discuss trees on Anzac Avenue. Together they gathered ideas on the best ways to preserve and honour the history of the elms on Anzac Avenue.

Was the removal legal and approved?

A heritage permit was granted by the Victorian Government, 306/2025/VS02 and covers the removal of the tree to reduce the risk to our community.

Is Council doing anything to retain the memory and stories behind these trees?

There is an existing plaque which will be relocated to another elm on Anzac Avenue.

We are also looking into different ways to keep the story and heritage of the elms on Anzac Avenue alive. This could look like propagations from existing elms to honour and in respect of the elms on Anzac Avenue.
