Retired racing greyhound Daisy proved she still had a burst of speed in her after escaping from her Elizabeth Downs home last week.
Her owner, Geoffrey Bagot Jardine, realised something was wrong when Daisy failed to come in for dinner.
"If there's one thing Daisy doesn't miss, it's dinner," Geoffrey said.Daisy was spotted by a concerned member of the public walking down Mavros Rd, Elizabeth Downs.
The quick-thinking local contacted Council, who were able to safely collect Daisy and return her home by scanning her microchip.
Her speedy reunion with Geoffrey is a timely reminder of the importance of pet microchipping and registration.
"It was a big relief to have her found so quickly," Geoffrey said. "Despite hanging up the racing boots, she can still make a run for her money."
In the past 12 months, the City of Playford has been contacted for animal related issues a total of 2369 times.
Mayor Glenn Docherty said Daisy's story highlights the value of responsible pet ownership.
"Not all escaped pets are as lucky as Daisy," Mayor Docherty said. "Even in what we think are secure yards, pets can find a way out-which is why it's so important they are microchipped and registered."
"In this case, we were able to reunite Daisy with her owner within the day. But when pets don't have ID, they often end up in animal shelters and can go weeks, or even months-before being identified."
"This puts unnecessary pressure on already overstretched animal welfare organisations like the RSPCA and AWL, and creates stress for both the pet and their family."
Pet registration must be renewed by 31 August 2025.
