Surf Coast Shire Council is continuing its annual Fire Prevention Roadside Slashing Program.

The program is expected to be completed by 31 December 2019.

The works commenced in the northern part of the shire in the hinterland, and are working down towards the coast.

"We know that community members want to see the roads they frequent slashed down, but it's important to be patient as the program is carried out in stages," Cr Tony Revell said.

Cr Revell said the program – which covers Council-managed roads – supported fire prevention during the 2019-20 Fire Danger Period.

"As a CFA volunteer firefighter, we know that the flame height of a fire in slashed grass is halved and the rate of spread of the fire is slowed. This makes the fire easier to put out," Cr Revell said. "The slashing will also assist road users by improving site distance at intersections."

Slashing was originally expected to be completed before Christmas however there were delays due to weather.
