Applications are open to both artists and venues in Playford looking to take part in the 2025 SALA Festival.
Neurodiverse artist and Munno Para West resident, Rachel Sanderson is among the first recipients of the City of Playford's solo exhibition subsidy and will present her exhibition Unique Kaos in the Great Hall at the Playford Civic Centre.
Specialising in abstract art and mandala dotting, Rachel has developed a vibrant and expressive body of work that reflects her creative voice and lived experience.
A passionate advocate for people living with disability, Rachel hopes her art will encourage others to pursue their passions.
"I want to show what people with disabilities are capable of - we can create, we shouldn't be pigeonholed. Our minds are just as beautiful as anyone else's, and we're capable of achieving so much."
While painting serves as a powerful emotional outlet, Rachel prefers not to title her abstract works.
"I don't like giving my work a title, I'd rather not put a label on it. I love hearing how others interpret it in their own way, without being influenced by what I think it should be."
Her pieces often include personal motifs tied to her neurodiversity, such as the repeated use of circles, a nod to her calming ritual of blowing bubbles.
Rachel's exhibition will be one of three to feature in the Great Hall of the Playford Civic Centre in Elizabeth during this year's festival in August Mayor Glenn Docherty said Council is proud to be using one of its most visited public spaces to showcase local artists.
"We've registered our Great Hall for SALA season, bringing a diverse array of works from talented artists into the heart of the community. It's a wonderful platform for artists to launch and further develop their careers," said Mayor Docherty.
"The $610 subsidy is helping Playford artists like Rachel, share their passion with the wider community and add a splash of colour to our everyday lives and popular Council venues."
Applications close Friday 6 June 2025, or earlier if the budget is fully allocated. To apply, applicants must be either a Playford resident or exhibiting within the Council area. Application forms are available at playford.sa.gov.au/grants. For more
