Residents on the northern Gold Coast now have access to a new self-serving recycling facility, featuring the city's first public vape disposal point to reduce battery fire risks.
Recycle Street first launched at the Helensvale Waste and Recycling Centre in 2018, before expanding to Merrimac, Molendinar, Reedy Creek and now Pimpama.
"53 per cent of items sent to landfill can be recycled or reused," Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel said.
"Recycle Street makes the process easier and more appealing, with colour-coded signage and shop-style drop-off points helping locals to identify where best to place recyclable goods.
"This simple idea has already contributed to an almost 60% increase in recyclables being brought in by residents.
Gold Coasters are also being reminded to correctly dispose of batteries this Christmas, following 21 waste collection truck fires in the past 12 months.
"Batteries, including those found in vapes, do not belong in the household bin because when they crush, they can spark, explode and start dangerous fires," Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel said.
"Some supermarkets have household battery bins at the front of the store, or you can take them to your closest Recycle Street."
The Pimpama Recycle Street accepts:
- charity bin items
- batteries
- gas bottles
- motor oil
- hazardous chemicals
- paint
- e-Waste
- white goods
- cardboard
- mixed recyclables.
Recycle Street is Stage 1 of a longer-term plan to deliver a premium Waste and Recycling Centre in Pimpama.
