Sell-out for historic finals clash

Jane Howlett,Minister for Sport and Recreation

Tickets to the blockbuster AFL elimination final this Sunday between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon Bombers have sold out within two hours of going on sale today.

As we've always said, if you bring the big clubs and the big matches to Tasmania, Tasmanians will turn up, and tickets for this historic match at UTAS Stadium in Launceston have been snapped up.

This is the first time finals will be played in Tasmania, with the Sydney Swans to also take on the GWS Giants on Saturday, and is a massive coup for our football-loving State.

This is such a great outcome for Tasmania, and in particular for local businesses in Launceston and surrounds who will benefit as people get out and about before and after the game.

Tasmania has demonstrated it can host AFL matches in a COVID-safe way, and the game will proceed under strict COVID-safe conditions, with important safeguards in place, including with a capped crowd and mask wearing for spectators.

Thanks to the AFL and the clubs involved for working with the Government and our Public Health authorities, and I look forward to a monumental weekend of footy ahead.

We can't wait for Tasmanians to have the opportunity to witness the spectacle of AFL finals games in our State for the very first time.
