Several injured, three grievously, after racially motivated assaults in Randwick

A man has been charged over the unprovoked assaults of several people in Randwick, which police allege were racially motivated., NSW Police say

About 9.45pm yesterday (Thursday 17 May 2018), a 25-year-old man walked along Avoca Street, Randwick, and punched an unidentified woman in the face.

He continued to walk along Avoca Street, allegedly assaulting several females in a group.

The man then walked on to Belmore Road, punching a 30-year-old man in the face before he allegedly punched and kicked a 70-year-old man, causing facial injuries.

The man then crossed the road and allegedly punched a 26-year-old woman in the face and kicked her several times in the body causing bruising and swelling.

A 30-year-old man attempted to intervene and was also punched in the face numerous times causing facial injuries.

A group of nearby workmen approached the man and restrained him until police arrived.

The 25-year-old was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station where he was charged with three counts of reckless grievous bodily harm and four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Police allege the assaults were bias-crime related, with the man targeting victims of Asian background.

He was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court today (Friday 18 May 2018).

Investigations into the incidents continue. Police are appealing for anyone who was assaulted, or who witnessed any assaults and have not yet spoken to police to come forward.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
